Small Steps to Change

If you want to make a few changes in your life, studies show that those changes are more likely to happen if you make small changes that gradually get you towards your goal.

Behavioural Scientist BJ Fogg says that we should look to take small steps, “tiny successes”, one after another.

With this attitude, we are setting ourselves small challenges that can easily be overcome.

If kept up over time, these behaviours will result in changed habits. According to Fogg, it is also helpful to adopt a mindset of success. In other words, “I am the kind of person who drinks lots of water”, rather than thinking it is impossible to accomplish.

Here are a few simple changes you might like to try. It may also be helpful to set yourself an initial period of a month over which to implement, and then reassess once that milestone has been reached.

  • One less teaspoon of sugar in your tea/ coffee

  • One less soft drink per week

  • One less beer a week

  • Drink water instead of fruit juice

  • One more portion of fresh fruit per day

  • One more serving of fresh vegetables per day

  • Have at least one meal without meat a week
